Vote AGAINST the “Citizen Only” Voting Amendment!
Why It’s Pointless, Confusing, and Dishonest
The proposed “Citizen Only” Voting Amendment on North Carolina ballots this election is raising concerns among voters and community leaders in North Carolina. Legally, this amendment doesn’t change anything – you already must be a U.S. citizen to vote. The amendment aims to change the language in the state constitution, but it doesn’t alter the current law, which requires citizenship for voting.
This amendment stems from false claims about non-citizen voting. In reality, cases of non-citizen voting are extremely rare. Existing federal and state laws already prevent non-citizens from voting, with strict penalties including prison time and deportation for those who violate these laws. Adding this amendment onlycreates confusion, particularly for naturalized citizens who might begin to question their eligibility to vote.
Moreover, the anti-immigrant rhetoric behind the push for this amendment can harm immigrant communities by fueling unfounded fears. This language sets the stage for future changes that could make it harder for eligible voters to participate in elections, especially for low-income people and communities of color.
It’s important to be informed about the amendment and its potential impacts. While it doesn’t change the law, it reflects a broader national trend of introducing barriers to voting, which could harm various groups of eligible voters. Staying informed and aware of how these changes could affect your rights is essential.
VOTE AGAINST this deceptive, unnecessary change to our state constitution.
